Coaching Business Mindset: "It's Not Worth It" Is Not the Real Thought with Tammy Nicole
Every coach who has ever stalled on a big decision - a new offer, a price increase, a visible leap - knows the feeling. Something you actually want. And a thought that says: it's not worth it.
That thought sounds reasonable. It sounds like discernment. It isn't.
In this episode of She Coaches Coaches, Candy Motzek sits down with Tammy Nicole - identity reclamation coach, speaker, and author with more than 20 years of experience in mental health. She Coaches Coaches reaches listeners in more than 127 countries, and this conversation goes to the root of what keeps coaches stuck long after they've done the surface-level work.
Tammy works with women through her signature ICU framework: Identify who you became, Clarify who you are, and Unleash who you were created to be. And her most precise observation about self-sabotage is one that coaches need to hear.
The Thought Underneath the Thought
Tammy says it directly: we chant-transition "I'm not worth it" into "it's not worth it" to validate the "I'm not worth it."
The belief that you aren't worthy of something is too raw to say out loud. So the brain translates it. It wraps it in logic. It's not the right time. It's too expensive. It probably won't work. It's not worth it.
And because it sounds like a reason - not a wound - you accept it. You move on. You don't do the thing.
This is the coaching business mindset pattern that keeps coaches undercharging, underserving, and underselling. Not because they lack strategy. Because there's a worthiness belief underneath every decision they make, and they haven't looked at it yet.
Tammy uses the root metaphor throughout her work: if you cut a tree down but leave the root, it grows back. Every time. Until you pull the root, the pattern returns.

The ICU Framework and the Five Rs
Tammy's ICU framework runs through five Rs: reveal, recognize, release, reclaim, and rise.
The first R is reveal. Not editing. Not minimizing. Getting back to the root. Going into what actually happened - what shaped the patterns you're still living in now.
The second is recognize. What storyline did you create around those experiences? What did you decide those events meant about you?
The third is release. What no longer serves you? Tammy is direct here: not everything from your past is trash. You don't have to throw out everything. You keep what's useful and let go of what's holding you back.
The fourth is reclaim. Getting back to who you actually are - not the version shaped by other people's expectations, other people's timelines, other people's definitions of who you should be.
And the fifth - the hardest - is rise. Showing up as that woman consistently, even when it feels foreign. Even when the old version feels more comfortable just because it's familiar.
Tammy says rising is the most difficult R because we are creatures of habit. The new version of yourself is uncomfortable at first not because it's wrong - because it's unfamiliar. That discomfort is not a signal to stop. It's a signal that something real is changing.
Self-Trust Is the Foundation
One of the most practical insights in this conversation is about self-trust.
Tammy says: if you don't trust yourself to keep your word to yourself, none of this works.
And she doesn't build it in big leaps. She builds it in tiny ones. Say you're going to walk for 30 minutes. Walk for 30 minutes. And then tell yourself: good job. Look at you showing up for you.
That sounds almost too simple. It isn't. Most coaches give their word to everyone except themselves. They show up for clients, for deadlines, for obligations. They break the promise they made to themselves before the day is over.
Every broken promise erodes self-trust. Every kept promise builds it. And self-trust is what makes the ICU work stick.
When coaches are looking for validation from clients, from social media, from any external source - Tammy's diagnosis is always the same. You're seeking it from outside because you're not generating it from inside. And you can't generate it from inside if you don't trust yourself.
Build a coaching business your way by starting with the relationship that makes all the others work. That's the one with yourself.

The Gap Between Knowing and Doing
Tammy makes a point that coaches hear constantly and rarely address directly: knowing better doesn't mean doing better.
Knowledge is everywhere. Coaches have read the books, taken the courses, done the certifications. And they're still stuck in the same patterns.
Because the gap between knowing and doing isn't a knowledge problem. It's an application problem. And underneath the application problem is almost always worthiness.
I know what to do. I just don't know if it's worth it. I just don't know if I'm worth it.
Tammy's young client illustrates this. She came in knowing she wanted to teach. But she had narrowed teaching down to one picture - a classroom, specific hours, a specific kind of student. When Tammy helped her expand the picture, everything opened up.
You can teach multiple things in multiple ways. But you have to be willing to see yourself in a bigger frame first. That's identity work. That's coaching business mindset work. That's what changes the pattern.

Freedom Is What Becomes Possible
Candy asks Tammy what becomes possible when women do this work. Tammy's answer is one word: freedom.
Freedom from other people's judgment. Freedom from people-pleasing. Freedom from the constant seeking of validation that was never going to fill the gap anyway.
Tammy's podcast tagline says it: love yourself so much that love from others is a bonus.
Not because other people's love doesn't matter. Because when you're full from the inside, what comes from outside lands differently. It's overflow, not emergency supply. It's appreciation, not desperation.
That's what coaches who build sustainable practices know. They're not waiting for a client to tell them they're good enough. They already know. And that knowing - that self-trust, that identity clarity - is what lets them sign clients, hold boundaries, set prices, and show up fully without burning out.
Key Takeaways
-
"It's not worth it" is almost never the real thought. Worthiness is hiding underneath it. Look there first.
-
The five Rs - reveal, recognize, release, reclaim, rise - work in order. You can't skip the root.
-
Self-trust is built in tiny kept promises to yourself. Start there. Tell yourself good job when you follow through.
-
The gap between knowing and doing isn't a knowledge problem. It's a worthiness problem wearing logic as a disguise.
-
Love yourself so much that love from others is a bonus. That's the foundation everything else is built on.
