The Legendary Self: Why High Achievers Feel Unfulfilled and What Coaches Need to Know
You built the career. You earned the credentials. You did everything the world said would make you successful. And something still feels hollow. Not dramatically. Not all the time. Just quietly, persistently, like the life you're living belongs to someone else.
That gap between external achievement and inner fulfillment is exactly what Dr. Elizabeth Locey has devoted her life to closing. In this episode of She Coaches Coaches, Candy Motzek sits down with Elizabeth, a New York Times-featured scholar, former tenured French professor, and Legendary Self Midwife, to talk about what it actually takes to move from a life built on other people's definitions of success to one built on who you really are.
The Career That Worked and Didn't Fit
Elizabeth's story begins in France, where she grew up as the child of academics. She went on to earn her PhD, become a professor, and build in 13 years the kind of career most people spend 40 years pursuing. She won awards that were typically given at the end of careers. She was excellent at the work. And none of it quite fit.
"The shadow of being an overachiever is that you're just not fulfilled," she says. "You're never satisfied because it's not doing the thing for you."
Over six years, she applied for positions at other universities. Every time she was the top candidate. Every time the search ended with some version of I don't know what happened and then they hired someone else. The universe, she says now, was keeping a lid on her. Not to be cruel. To keep her available for something else. [link to professional becoming a coach episode]
The final push came from a new dean whose energy she recognized immediately as problematic in ways her colleagues couldn't see. The environment became so difficult to stay in that leaving finally became easier than staying. She quit the morning after a super lunar blood moon lunar eclipse on January 1, 2010. And she didn't know what came next. She just knew she didn't want to do that anymore.
When You Can Finally See the Full Pattern
One of the most useful insights Elizabeth offers is about narrative and perspective. As a literature scholar trained to find the threads in a story, she was too close to her own to see the pattern clearly while she was living it.
"If you step way back and open it all up, then it's like, of course," she says. "Of course."
For coaches who are in the middle of a transition that doesn't yet make sense, this is worth sitting with. The pattern is there. The thread is real. But you often can't see it until you've lived enough of it to step back and take in the whole shape. [link to mindset playlist]
What the Legendary Self Actually Is
Elizabeth calls herself a Legendary Self Midwife. And the Legendary Self, as she describes it, is the divine essence version of you. The part that knows exactly what the next step is. The part that knows which connections are right and which aren't. The part that can move through the world without apology, without second-guessing, fully trusting its own intuition.
It means something different for every person. Elizabeth's own Legendary Self has three elements. A dragon, an enormous ancient tree that witnesses all of time, and a female figure standing in the center of a hurricane, moving energy.
The work Elizabeth does is not about giving people a new identity. It's about helping them access and embody the one they already have. The one that was always there but got covered over by family expectations, cultural conditioning, academic training, corporate ladders, and decades of doing what was expected rather than what was true. The process she uses involves guiding clients into a highly intuitive state and prompting them with questions that help them see and experience their Legendary Self directly. It's an active, experiential process. The client does the discovering. Elizabeth holds the space and asks the questions.
"They're in this highly intuitive moment of truth for themselves," she says. "And it's just amazing."
Marrying Your Magic
One of the most practically resonant concepts in this conversation is what Elizabeth calls your magic. Not magic as sleight of hand. Magic as the full assemblage of your gifts. The mundane ones and the extraordinary ones, taken together.
The mundane gifts are things like an ability to write in a way that moves people, to cook a meal that brings people to life, to create something beautiful with your hands. Things that feel ordinary to you because they come easily.
The extraordinary gifts are the ones that aren't so easy to explain. An ability to sense what's happening beneath the surface of a conversation. A knowing that you need to turn left today even though you always turn right. A healing presence that changes the energy in a room.
Elizabeth's point is that most people dismiss both categories. The mundane ones because they feel too ordinary to count. The extraordinary ones because they feel too strange to claim.
"The things that come so naturally we can't stop doing them," she says. "That's the definition of a gift."
She tells the story of an ICU nurse who, whenever she was the charge nurse, people didn't die. In an ICU. She dismissed it completely. When Elizabeth named it during their Akashic Records session, the nurse said, well, that's not a gift. And Elizabeth's response was clear. If you could bottle it, you could sell it for ten million dollars per bottle.
For coaches who are still struggling to articulate what makes them different, this reframe is worth returning to. Your most powerful gift is probably the thing you do so naturally you assume everyone can do it. They can't. [link to niche episode]
What the World Actually Needs
Elizabeth's bio contains a line worth quoting directly. The world doesn't need more exhausted experts. It needs courageous leaders willing to let go of old patterns, embody their deepest truth, and create a ripple effect of transformation for everyone they serve.
For coaches who are still building their businesses from the outside in, collecting credentials and strategies and frameworks, hoping the next thing will be the thing that finally makes it click, this is a direct challenge.
The most aligned coaching business isn't built on what you know. It's built on who you are. And who you are, at the level Elizabeth works at, is far more powerful, more specific, and more irreplaceable than any credential or certification could capture. Key Takeaways
-
The shadow of overachievement is chronic unfulfillment. Accolades don't fill the gap between who you appear to be and who you actually are.
-
The threads of your story make sense when you step back far enough to see the full pattern. The detours weren't failures. They were redirections.
-
The Legendary Self is your divine essence, the version of you that knows what the next step is and moves without apology. It doesn't need to be created. It needs to be uncovered.
-
Your most powerful gifts are often the ones you dismiss as ordinary. The things that come so naturally you assume everyone has them. They don't.
-
The world doesn't need more exhausted experts. It needs coaches and leaders willing to build from who they actually are.
