Voice-Body Alignment for Coaches: Why Your Clients Feel What You Don't Say with Danielle Benzon
Most coaches spend their energy on the right words. The right message. The right offer. The right positioning. And all of that matters. But according to Danielle Benzon, voice-body coach, theater-trained speaker expert, and founder of The Inspired Speaker, there's something else happening in every coaching conversation, every sales call, and every time you show up in front of someone who might hire you. Your body is broadcasting. And your clients are receiving every signal whether you know it or not.
In this episode of She Coaches Coaches, I sit down with Danielle to talk about what theater training taught her about the voice-body instrument, why coaches are often just traveling heads, and what it actually takes to show up in full alignment so that trust and safety happen almost automatically.
Your Body Is an Instrument
Danielle didn't invent the voice-body instrument concept. She learned it in theater school. And it changed her relationship with herself.
"Everything from the way your knees are positioned to the way your feet are on the floor to the way you hold your shoulders, everything in your body affects the way your voice sounds," she says.
When you understand that your body is a sound system, not just a transportation system for your head, you start to notice things you couldn't see before. You can tell what's going on emotionally with someone just by listening to their voice. You can hear tension. You can hear holding back. You can hear when someone is trying to sound more confident than they feel.
For coaches, this matters in every direction. It matters in how you show up for clients. It matters in sales conversations. It matters in how you feel in your own body while you're doing the work. [link to coaching mindset playlist]
Message Cohesion: The Thing Most Coaches Are Missing
Candy names it beautifully in this conversation. She calls it message cohesion. The alignment of body, emotions, voice, and intellect. When all four are in alignment and there are no internal barriers in the way, people feel safe with you almost instantly.
When something is out of alignment, even slightly, your clients feel it. Not consciously. They don't think this tone in your voice is making me uncomfortable. They just feel uneasy. They pull back. They don't fully trust. They can't quite say why.
"It's amazing how safe you can make somebody feel by being consciously, intentionally, physically, emotionally, vocally, intellectually in alignment with no barriers in the way," Danielle says. "It's amazing how quickly people will feel comfortable with you."
This is why two coaches with identical words and identical offers can create completely different experiences for a potential client. One is in alignment. The other isn't. And the client knows which is which before a single coaching technique has been applied. [link to how to sign coaching clients playlist]
Most Coaches Are Just Traveling Heads
One of the most striking observations in this conversation is Candy's description of the coaches she works with. Many of them are traveling heads. Extremely intelligent, deeply capable, highly trained professionals for whom the body is essentially a tripod. Something to carry the brain from one Zoom call to the next.
Danielle agrees. And she extends the point to speakers, leaders, and teachers. We treat the body like a transportation system when it's actually the entire instrument. We work on our message, our slides, our delivery, but we don't actually live in our bodies. And that disconnection shows up everywhere.
It shows up in how decisive you are. Danielle says she's one of the most decisive people she knows because she lives in her body. She knows how she feels about things. She doesn't agonize. When you're overthinking every decision, it's often because you've cut yourself off from the part of you that already knows the answer. [link to coaching business mindset episode]
The Breathing Exercise That Reveals Everything
The most practically useful moment in this conversation is a simple exercise Danielle walks through live. It checks whether your breath and your voice are actually connected. And for most people, they're not.
Here's what happens. When we're young, something occurs that teaches us to disconnect our voice and our breath. We learn that being emotionally transparent isn't safe. And the way we manage that is by holding just a little bit of breath back when we speak.
It's not a dramatic disconnection. It's subtle. But you can hear it. And more importantly, you can feel the difference when you release it.
Try this now. Say your name and where you're from while breathing in and holding just a little bit back. Notice how it sounds. Notice how it feels. Then say it again while breathing in and speaking and breathing out at exactly the same time, no holding back at all.
"That holding back is what allows us to say we're okay when we're not," Danielle says. "It's what allows us to pretend we're not as nervous as we are."
When breath and voice are fully connected, you can't help but be emotionally transparent. For coaches who have been working on showing up more authentically, this is the physical practice behind the intention. [link to journaling and mindset episode]
There Is a Sound to Truth
One of the most memorable lines in this conversation is simple. There is a sound to truth.
Danielle can hear it. And she says coaches already can too, even if they don't know what they're listening for. When someone is aligned, when their breath and voice are connected and their body and emotions are in agreement, their voice sounds different. There's a quality to it that registers somewhere below conscious awareness.
Coaches already have their radar up, Candy observes. They sense when something's off in a client. They feel it before they can name it. What Danielle is offering is a way to make that sensing more precise, more conscious, and more usable as a coaching tool.
And it works on yourself too. "Sometimes if I can't make a decision, I'll speak it out loud," Danielle says. "And by the time I'm finished saying it, I know what I want because one of them sounds more truthful than the other."
For coaches who struggle with decisions about their business, their pricing, their niche, or their next move, this is a surprisingly practical tool. Speak it out loud. Breathe fully. And listen to what your own voice tells you. [link to niche episode]
How to Use This in Your Coaching Practice
Candy spends the last part of this conversation thinking out loud about what coaches can do with this approach and the ideas come quickly.
Use it for yourself first. Practice the breath and voice connection before your coaching sessions, before sales calls, before any conversation where you need to be fully present. Notice how it shifts your energy and your groundedness.
Use it in sessions. Notice how your clients sound when they talk about the things that matter most. Notice when they're holding back. Notice when they suddenly exhale fully and their voice changes.
Use it to open sessions. Start by inviting clients to breathe and connect before you begin. It takes 60 seconds and it shifts the quality of everything that follows.
"I've just learned this and I'm thinking all of these things you could do with it," Candy says. "It's amazing."
Key Takeaways
-
Your body is a sound system, not just a transportation system for your head. Everything from how you stand to how you breathe affects how your voice sounds and how people experience you.
-
Message cohesion, the alignment of body, voice, emotion, and intellect, is what creates instant trust and safety. When something is out of alignment, clients feel it even when they can't name it.
-
Most people hold their breath back slightly when they speak. That tiny disconnection is the physical mechanism of not being fully present. Releasing it changes everything.
-
There is a sound to truth. Connected, aligned voices sound different. And coaches can learn to hear it in themselves and in their clients.
-
Living in your body makes you more decisive, more resilient, and more genuinely present with clients. It's not just about speaking. It affects your whole business.
