How to Create Coaching Programs That Clients Actually Want
One of the most common stumbling blocks for new coaches is creating their first coaching program. Too often, they fall into one of two traps:
- Overstuffing the program with everything they know, leaving clients overwhelmed and scattered.
- Being too vague, offering “12 sessions of coaching” without a clear result, leaving clients confused and hesitant to buy.
I recently spoke with Stephanie O’Brien, a program design expert who has helped coaches package their expertise since 2013. She explained what makes the difference between a program that sells and one that struggles.
The Power of a Clear Transformation
Clients don’t buy “coaching.” They buy results. The first step in program design is deciding what transformation you want to help people achieve. Then, only include the steps your clients actually need to reach that transformation.
Stephanie recommends asking:
- Does the client need this piece of content to achieve the result?
- Can the client actually implement this advice at their current stage?
- Is this the right time in their journey for this step, or should it be saved for a follow-up program?
Avoid the “Kitchen Sink” Mistake
More isn’t always better. Trying to include every single thing you know can actually decrease the value of your program, because it dilutes the focus. Instead, focus on one core result, and trust that you can always create future programs for advanced needs.
Build Trust With Structure
Even savvy clients get skeptical when a coach promises big results but can’t explain how. A clear program structure — transformation, steps, timeline — not only delivers better results, it also builds credibility.
Test and Improve
If you’re unsure whether your program will deliver, try a “founders club” launch with a small group at a reduced price. Get feedback, refine your program, and build confidence while still being paid for your work.
Remember: You Don’t Have to Be the World’s Top Expert
Stephanie reminds us that you don’t need to be the biggest expert in the room to change lives. You only need to be a few steps ahead of your clients, able to guide them to the transformation they want. Sometimes, being newer even helps, because you still remember what it’s like to be at the beginning.
