DO I NEED A COACHING NICHE? HERE’S THE REAL TRUTH Ep 289

Do I Really Need a Niche to Start Coaching? (The Truth New Coaches Need to Hear) Ep 289

If you’ve been spinning in circles trying to land the perfect niche before you officially “start” your coaching business, take a deep breath. You’re not alone and you’re not behind.

The truth is, this question stalls more new coaches than almost anything else. It feels responsible to wait until you’re clear. It feels smart to get everything nailed down before moving forward. But what’s really happening?

You’re stuck in neutral. And vague = invisible.

Let’s shift that today. Here’s what you actually need to know about niching and how to move forward with clarity, momentum, and confidence.

Why “No Niche” = No Momentum

When you don’t have a niche or even just a simple, clear message,it becomes almost impossible for your ideal client to find you.

You might be posting, talking about coaching, telling people you’re available… but it’s not landing. It’s like you’re waving at everyone and no one’s waving back.

That’s because your audience has a Reticular Activating System a built-in filter that scans for what matters most. If someone is struggling with burnout, their brain is on the lookout for words like “overwhelm,” “exhaustion,” or “boundaries.” But if your message is something vague like “live your best life” or “achieve your goals,” you’re not hitting their radar.

This isn’t about being a better marketer. It’s about making sure the people who need you can actually see you.

What a Niche Really Is (And What It’s Not)

Let’s take the pressure off. Your niche doesn’t have to be perfect, permanent, or poetic.

A niche is simply:

  • A group of people with a shared identity or experience (Market)
  • A clear outcome or transformation you help them achieve (Message)

That’s it.

Here are a few examples to make it real:

  • “I help new managers build confidence so they stop second-guessing themselves.”
  • “I help women in midlife recover from burnout and put themselves first.”
  • “I help creatives finally launch the passion projects they’ve been sitting on for years.”

No fluff. Just clarity.

My 3-Question Shortcut to Niche Clarity

Not sure where to begin? I’ve got you.

Grab a notebook and answer these three questions:

  1. Who do you love helping?
Think real people not demographics. Who lights you up? Whose stories move you?
  2. What are they struggling with right now?
Not someday, today. What’s keeping them up at night or stuck in a loop?
  3. What result are they craving?
What outcome would make them say, “That’s exactly what I need”?

When you answer these, don’t try to sound fancy. Just be honest. That’s where your best, most magnetic messaging lives.

You’re Allowed to Start Before It’s Perfect

Here’s the part most coaches don’t hear enough:

Your niche will evolve.

It gets clearer through conversations, sessions, real-world practice not by sitting in your head trying to map it all out on paper.

You don’t need more time. You need more action.

Start with the clarity you do have. Start where it feels close. Let the rest refine as you go.

Remember: you don’t need a clever niche. You need a clear one.
