Episode 17: Why Consistency Is The Key To Helping You Grow Your Coaching Business Faster and More Easily
Transcript
Hey Friends, How are you? I’m glad you’re here and welcome to Episode 17. Today we’re going to talk about consistency.
This is kind of a weird topic because it feels hard, so we don’t want to go there. But I’m going to tell you why consistency is probably THE MOST Underrated quality for coaches and entrepreneurs.
Let me what this little bit about my days first ok? I love telling you about my day to day because, it helps me to feel like we’re a bit better connected. My goal with this podcast is to be an inspiring, empowering voice in your ear. I want to be like your virtual mentor and your coach. This morning, it’s sunny and believe me this won’t last long, pretty soon I’ll be slogging through the wet to get to my she shed. But for today, the birds are singing, they are eating the suet I put out and finding bugs to chomp on too. That’s how they keep warm and their energy up during the winter.
I don’t know if I told you that I planted some purple and yellow winter pansies in my window boxes. I always feel sad when I pull the summer flowers out and replacing them with these little pansies helps. Their bright cheery colours peek through the window as I’m coaching my wonderful clients. I’ve got some of the best clients in the world, I can’t tell you how grateful I am that I get to work with these wonderful people.
Oh right, I was going to tell you about some updates in free resource library, The Coaches Online Business Academy. There’s details in the show notes about how you can sign up for your free access. But…. drumroll please, I’ve been adding more things for you. If you haven’t signed up …why not????
It’s almost the end of the month and we’re getting closer to the end of the year.
I know it’s an understatement to say it, but we’ve had a tough year and one of the ways to move forward and start fresh is to create a vision board.
Sooooooo…one of the most popular downloads in the Coaches Online Business Academy right now is my guide about how to create a vision board. I created awhile ago and now is the time to have a bit of fun dreaming about what’s to come.
Like I said today, we’re talking about consistency.
At first some of you might say Oh, consistency feels kind of dull, or even boring. It doesn’t have the same excited rush of newness that I love. It’s no fun…don’t make me be consistent, I’m too creative. And I want to use this episode to change your mind about consistency.
So, when I went to The Google here’s what it had to say, “Uniformity of successive results or events.” And I thought what? What does that even mean? It sounds like a robot or an assembly line. So, I went back and decided that I like these synonyms better than the definition: Reliable, dependable, trustworthy and even unfailing and persistent.
That’s what we’re going to use. Reliable, trustworthy, dependable, unfailing and persistent.
So why is consistency important?
Because it’s so easy not to be consistent. We come up with a great idea, start and get it up and running only to get bored and distracted after a few weeks. Then we just let it slide and move on to the next thing that’s exciting.
But as a coach and an entrepreneur especially an online entrepreneur consistency can make or break your business and here’s why.
Growth
Show up
Build authority
Momentum
Growth. Another way to describe this is to start and then evaluate what you’ve done and your results. Ask yourself what did you do well? What needs to change? How could you improve? And then make those adjustments.
This applies everywhere and I want you to do it with compassion for yourself. Because the first few times you do a sample session, a FB Live or a training you’ll probably be bad. And that’s ok, when you are kind and accept yourself, you’ll know that your skill level will improve with consistent action evaluation and adjusting. My coach talks about “tweaking” and I like her approach. Tweaking means I only need to make a small change, then another and another. All those small changes, small improvement accumulate and before I know it, I’ve grown. Stopping and starting, trying something new at first seems exciting and in the end, you sabotage your growth. Sticking with your plan, evaluating, tweaking, and growing is the fastest way.
Show up for your people. The work you do is important and meaningful. Consistent means showing up reliably for your people. You are demonstrating that you will be there, that you are trustworthy and when they are ready to take the next step, you’re ready for them.It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about social posts, sending a weekly email or reliably showing up at a networking event. These small deposits in the trust bank accumulate. You’ll get more meaningful success and have more impact when you connect with your people and show up to help them consistently.
Build your authority. I remember a couple of years ago I decided I wanted to create an asset in my business. That asset was a blog. Now when I talk about an asset for your coaching business what I mean is it’s something useful. It’s a valuable thing.
For me, to get started I decided to write a blog post every day for thirty days and I did. Since then I’ve posted over 150 blog posts on my website Step Into Success Now. Some are written, some are video and now some are podcast episodes too.
There are so many I’ve pulled together a guidebook for my coaching clients. This guidebook outlines all the content on my website and gives links to follow on topics like how to become a life coach, how to get started as a coach, how to attract clients, how to discover your niche and motivation and inspiration for when you’re feeling down and so much more.
Writing, recording, and filming has helped me find my voice. It didn’t happen overnight but when I look back at all of this material, I am amazed at what’s possible because I showed up consistently.
My suggestion to you is to choose one method. Choose the easiest method and start creating content that will help your people. Even if no one reads it or listens to it, you’re going to learn so much about them and come up with so many more ways you can help them too.
Momentum – building your habits, one tiny step at a time builds momentum. At first it looks like nothing is happening. And it’s true. If you’d given up after the first few tries, it’s true nothing will have happened. But over time you build, and you start to move the needle and it gets easier. It’s funny, for example with this podcast I usually batch my episodes 3-4 at a time. The first episode is hard, but once I’ve done one, then the next is easier and soon I’ve got so much to say I have to stop myself or I’ll be recording at night and I’ll have 3 months worth of episodes scheduled and ready to go. That’s momentum in action.
So, these four things are important. But I want to take a moment a recognize that they aren’t easy. It takes grit, courage, confidence, and commitment to show up consistently.
And even though it’s hard. It’s worth it. Think about it. This boring little skill, consistency, allows you to progress faster, grow into your voice and your authority, become a trusted mentor and coach for your clients. And when you put all of this together you realize you will have more impact and more success. You’re going to help more people and you’re going to make more money doing it.
So that’s it for today friends. Come listen next week for the next episode. I can’t wait to connect with you then.
