Do you ever wonder why getting ahead can sometimes seem like such a struggle? The truth is: if you want to be highly successful, you need to have a vision, create great habits and stay focussed.
Most successful coaches, leaders and entrepreneurs credit a few simple routines and mindset shifts they’re doing every day that give them the edge and help them succeed.
Before we dive in you might wonder, what do I mean by success anyway? You may be thinking I’m talking about measuring success by tallying up your accomplishments, what you’ve achieved through grinding and hard work or where you happen to be on the career ladder.
Nope, not this time…you’re not going to get this explanation from me.
I’m talking about the success you have when you feel fulfilled and connected. The success you feel when you go to bed at night and you know that you matter and that you’ve made a difference in the world. The success that comes from knowing you get to use your gifts and superpowers.
Now let’s dive into the 5 habits and mindset shifts we’re talking about today.
- Focus on what matters
- Take care of body, mind and spirit
- Know there are no overnight successes
- Write every day in a journal
- Surround yourself with positive people and consciously choose what you consume
Focus On What Matters
Spend your time and efforts on your priorities. When deciding what goes on your to-do list, focus on productivity. Choose to do the actions that will move the needle instead of busywork.
Ultimately, you can choose what to do with your time. You have far more choice than you might originally think.
Do you hate doing the laundry? Take it to the cleaners.
Do you not want to bake homemade goodies for your child’s fundraiser? Don’t! Buy something instead.
Hate grocery shopping? Order online and have it delivered.
Take some time and think again about all the things you say you have to do. I bet you can find many that are not mandatory. These things may have become a habit, which is different than being necessary. Sure, you might have to put up with some raised eyebrows, or even some disapproval, but if you have other things that are more important, isn’t it worth it?
Take Care Of You: Body, Mind And Spirit
All of the aspects of YOU are vitally important and each needs care, attention, nurturing and a healthy dose of love.
Self-care is not selfish.
When you’re resilient there is more available to you to live a fulfilling life and make the contributions you crave.
Each day keep your physical energy high by feeding your body healthy food and water. Then move your body…it could be running, walking, dancing, yoga or weightlifting. Your body was created to move, and this will help you feel better physically and emotionally.
Take care of your mind. Feed it inspiring thoughts.
Choose your thoughts wisely, because your thoughts create your emotions and the results you can achieve. Read books, listen to podcasts, learn something new, contemplate interesting and thought-provoking questions.
Your spirit encompasses Source, the All-That-Is. Connect with your spirit every day through meditation and prayer.
Know There Is No Overnight Success
Whatever you’re aspiring too, takes time. Social media might have you thinking….”I should be able to have my dream coaching practice in 3 months” or “I should be able to publish a best-selling book in 30 days” but in reality everything good takes time.
Don’t fall for the ‘faster is better’ myth. If becoming a fully booked coach or writing the book you’ve dreamed of is important to you, why rush it? Don’t forget, every goal and achievement that you pursue comes with the added benefit of helping you grow into an even better person than you are today.
Just about everything improves when you take the approach that it’s going to take time. Sure, some things will take less time but isn’t it more important that you enjoy the journey and savour all the lessons and experiences you will have along the way?
Journal Writing Every Day
Writing in a journal is a great way to coach yourself and process your thoughts and feelings.
If you’re new, start by selecting a beautiful book that you enjoy looking at and handling. Look for one that holds enough with pages and stays open so you can write comfortably.
Journal writing ideas to get started:
- Capture your gratitude. Spend time focussing on your blessings large and small.
- Work through your anger, sadness, frustrations and fears. Writing about how you feel is cathartic…you will feel so much better for the rest of the day.
- Write about your goals and dreams. Once they are on paper, they are well on their way to becoming real.
- Brainstorm great ideas and strategize how to make them happen
Listen And Learn
Relationships are key to a fulfilling successful life. Each one of us has the basic human need for significance. Each of us wants to be seen and heard and when we are we blossom.
This reminds me of an approach Oprah uses in all her interviews. She appreciates that each person wants to know:
Did you see me?
Did you hear me?
Did what I say matter to you?
We can always learn from listening deeply to another’s perspective. Sure, we have our own view on life, and we sometimes think that our view is the right one. When you start learning another’s viewpoint and learn how and why they do the things they do, you will have an enhanced view of humanity, possibility and connectedness.
Taking the time to listen, really listen, to people around us fosters connection and harmony.
