3 Quick Steps To Combat Overwhelm

Are you overwhelmed with too many things to do? Do you feel frazzled and too busy to even think?

If that’s you, it’s time to take a breath.

You’re not alone in feeling this way. I’ve felt the same way too in the past, and while you’re reading this there are probably many other people out there who are in the same boat.

So, what do you do after you take a breath? Three things.

1. First, instead of pushing it away and mentally beating yourself up, admit how you’re feeling.

The easiest way to process this is by writing in a journal.

Start with a brain dump. Vent all your frustrations onto the paper. The act of getting it out of your head and onto the page will help you get clear about what’s really going on.

2. Next, give yourself permission to take a 15 to 20-minute break. Take the time to do something that will help you feel better. Allow yourself some grace time to do whatever pleases you.

 Some examples:

- Grab your jacket and go outside for a casual walk
- Pour a cup of tea and quietly read a book
- Call a friend and have a laugh
- Put on your favourite music and dance around the kitchen
- Take a cat nap

I don’t recommend using this grace time to scroll through your Instagram feed. Steer away from social media during this time.

3. Finally, choose one, only one, of the many things you are wanting to accomplish.

Set the timer on your phone for 30-minutes and dive in.

At the end of your 30-minute time slot, you will have made some great progress all while feeling more centred and focussed. Now you are able to decide what you want to do next. Do you want to continue this same task, switch tasks or have you actually gotten enough done for today?

When you use this 3-step approach, you’ll find you are way more productive once you have gotten centred and focussed.

You may, in fact, find that you were wasting more time worrying and spinning your wheels than making progress.

Let me know how it goes.
